I have a 96 jeep grand cherokee, the charging system is not working?

it has an auto trans, rwd. the car needs to be jumped , after a minuet or 2 the gauges die and it says check gauges. the car dies alltogether soon after. i have replaced the alt, and its working fine, any ideas?
