How can I get an even, natural looking tan?

I am a natural redhead and pretty fair-skinned, but I don't sunburn too badly. I was wondering what would be a good tanning accelerator or something like it so that I could get a little bit of color on for the summer. I used Bath and Body Works tanning lotion, and it works for a few days, but the coloring gets splotchy after a while. I want a good even, golden color so that I can wear shorts and not blind people with the whiteness of my legs. lol Thanks for your help! Have a beautiful day!
