Do you need a x.509 certificate to setup a site with ssl/tls encryption (https)?

Is it possible to go to a href="https://www.example.com" rel="nofollow"https://www.example.com/a and not encounter a certificate whatsoever or do the TLS/SSL protocols require use of a certificate from a certificate authority?
